In Southern Rheinhessen a fossil soil is to be found beneath the relictic steppe-soil of the postglacial warm periods. It is of up to 100 cm in thickness and is an A-horizon of a steppe-soil, the formation of which probably took place in the Alleröd-period. A layer of tuffs which could substantiate this date was not found. It is also supposed that during the Younger Dryas-period accumulation of loess took place. At a later time the postglacial steppe-soil developed on it.
